WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

Blue Sky participants pay a little extra on their bill each month, and PacifiCorp purchases renewable energy certificates on their behalf from newly developed facilities in the western region. The renewable energy supported by Blue Sky participants is above and beyond the renewable resources in the company’s basic service mix.

Here’s how participant money is allocated:

  • Renewable energy: Pacific Power purchases renewable energy certificates on behalf of participants from newly developed facilities in the West.
  • Education, outreach and administration: We dedicate a portion of the program funds to provide customers with education and awareness about their renewable energy options.
  • Community projects and habitat restoration:
    • The Block option also supports the construction of new community-based renewable energy projects in participant states. For more information on projects supported by Pacific Power block participants visit this map. For more information on projects supported by Rocky Mountain Power block participants visit this document.
    • The Habitat option (available to Oregon customers) also funds native fish habitat restoration through PacifiCorp’s partnership with The Freshwater Trust. For more information on the projects supported by Habitat participants, visit The Freshwater Trust website and map.
WHAT'S A RENEWABLE ENERGY CERTIFICATE (REC)?

A REC represents the environmental benefits of 1 megawatt hour of renewable energy. RECs are one way the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends procuring renewable energy.

To learn more about RECs, watch this short video or visit the EPA’s website.

DOES PACIFICORP PROFIT FROM BLUE SKY?

No, PacifiCorp does not profit from Blue Sky.

WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION DO?

Participation creates environmental benefits and helps drive more demand for renewable energy, decreasing the region’s dependence on fossil fuels.

WHAT MAKES THIS PROGRAM SPECIAL?

The National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) recognized PacifiCorp’s Blue Sky as No. 1 in Green Power Sales in 2022. NREL compiles the data and creates “top 10” lists on green energy programs to recognize outstanding programs. Learn more by visiting the NREL 2022 list.

IS THERE A CONTRACT?

No! Participation is voluntary, requires no contracts or installation, and can be canceled at any time.

CAN CUSTOMERS SIGN UP IF THEY LIVE IN AN APARTMENT?

Yes! Customers can rent or own and still be eligible to participate in Blue Sky as long as they’re a PacifiCorp account holder. Other eligible housing types include condos, houses or tiny homes, etc., that are powered by PacifiCorp.

WHAT’S RENEWABLE ENERGY AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Simply put, renewable energy is energy from sources such as wind and solar that replenish themselves without depleting the Earth’s resources. Compared to traditional energy sources, renewable energy offers benefits that include:

  • Lower levels of air pollutants and wastewater
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • Reduced reliance on imported and domestic fossil fuels
  • Stimulates our regional economies — creating jobs and building a market for new renewable energy projects
CAN CUSTOMERS PARTICIPATE IF THEY’RE ON AN EQUAL PAY PROGRAM?

Customers can enroll in Blue Sky and remain in an Equal Pay Program. Blue Sky will be added to the total cost of their regular bill. If they select the Block option, their Blue Sky portion will be a fixed monthly cost. However, if they’re an Oregon customer and select the Usage or Habitat options, the Blue Sky portion of their monthly bill will fluctuate with their actual electricity usage each month.

CAN CUSTOMERS PARTICIPATE IF THEY’RE ON A TIME OF USE PROGRAM?

Time of Use customers are eligible to enroll in the Blue Sky Block option, but are ineligible to enroll in the Blue Sky Usage & Habitat options. With Time of Use plans, customers are billed based on when they use electricity. They can save money by shifting energy use to lower-cost off-peak hours, when the demand for electricity is lower.

WHAT IS THE PROGRAM'S IMPACT?

Since the start of the program, Blue Sky participants…

  • Have collectively supported over 13.9 million megawatt-hours of renewable energy
  • That’s equal to energy needed to power 1.3 million homes for a year*

Blue Sky Block participants helped fund 367 community projects in CA, WA, OR, UT, ID and WY.

Blue Sky Habitat participants also donated $2,172,834.88 to The Freshwater Trust for Oregon native fish and habitat restoration.

*Based on the 2023 PacifiCorp system-wide average residential customer’s electricity use of 838 kilowatt-hours per month.
